The Return of the Great Stonelaw Bake Off!

Saturday 7th March 2020 11am – 1pm

By popular demand, the Great Stonelaw Bake Off is back! Do your baking at home, bring it in the morning and then everyone can come and sample the results. There will be various categories, suitable for all ages and abilities.

The 'Signature Challenge', a set recipe that everyone has to follow, is going to be Battenberg Cake. We hope to have some guest judges again with prizes for the best entries.

This should be a fun event for all ages, so even if you can't bake, come along and enjoy some of the entries with a tea, coffee or juice. Any proceeds that we make are going to support Cambuslang and Rutherglen Reachout Trust who work with local schools and churches to spread the news of Jesus amongst young people in our area. Look out for more information over the coming weeks, but in the meantime - "On your marks, recipes out, BAKE!!! "

If you want to know more, please contact Jennifer Menzies on 647 4664 or menzies06@btinternet.com or Therese Reid on therese.stonelawchurch@gmail.com

*Horatio’s Garden opened in August 2016 at the Scottish National Spinal Injuries Unit at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow. This is the spinal unit for the whole of Scotland. Horatio’s Garden has transformed the view for patients from the wards and communal rooms to something which is life-affirming to look out onto. The planting encourages birds, butterflies and bees, adding a dimension of interest for patients who can be on bed rest for weeks. There has been much evidence that gardens and gardening have a positive effect on a person’s physical, mental and emotional well-being.

SYLVIA BARNES & SANDY STANAGE

"You need great skill, wide knowledge and a deep love of your art to do this really well" –

Sheena Wellington

"Sylvia Barnes has a superb Scots singing style" – Norman Chalmers, Scotland on Sunday "an inspiration to me" – Dougie Pincock "The guitar guv'nor" – Archie Fisher

Sylvia and Sandy have been performing as a duo since 2006, the year that saw Sylvia crowned "Scots Singer of the Year" at the Scots Trad Music Awards; however their association goes back to the heady days of the '70s, when both were founder members of the influential Glasgow band Kentigern. Sylvia went on from there to become one of the elite group of female vocalists to sing with Battlefield Band, before moving to England with husband Jim in the 1980s, where they continued to work as a duo as well as fronting various bands, becoming firm favourites with folk club and festival audiences throughout the country and abroad and releasing a number of well-received recordings.

Sandy had previously been a member of another noted Glasgow band, Molendinar. After Kentigern he continued to work as a soloist and with numerous singers and musicians, as well as appearing on a number of recordings, before releasing two solo albums, Crossing the Line and The De'il...& Other Cronies, to much critical acclaim. He also spent four years on the teaching staff of the RSAMD (now Royal Conservatoire of Scotland). Sandy released his third solo album, Touch Wood, in 2017.

Their first project as a twosome was the recording and release in 2007 of Sylvia's first solo album, The Colour of Amber, for Greentrax Records, which Sandy produced and played a major musical role on. This has been followed in 2013 by a duo album, Tickets to the Void.

In recent years Sylvia and Sandy have appeared at clubs, festivals and workshops across the length and breadth of the UK, as well as in Italy, France and Germany, performing a wide range of material from traditional Scots ballads and the songs of Robert Burns, to the very best of contemporary songwriting. Their performances are a showcase of passion, humour and commitment to the songs and music, with their obvious vocal and instrumental virtuosity never getting in the way of the essence of the material. Pete Heywood (Living Tradition) described a recent performance as displaying "such conviction and emotion. A masterpiece performance."

Acoustic nights@ the Meeting Place present...Turadh.

Date - Friday 30th August
Time - 7.30 (doors open 7.00pm)
Entry - £5 (donation) Children go free
Tea/filter coffee and home baking included
Limited seating - come early to avoid disappointment

We are very excited to announce the long awaited return of the wonderfully talented duo Turadh back to the Meeting Place. Their music and original compositions transport you to another place and time. Evocative and mesmerising.

Clarsach player, Isbel Pendlebury, is a graduate of Strathclyde University’s esteemed BA applied music degree. A highly skilled performer having performed at events from the Lorient Interceltique music festival in France to the Metropolitan club in New York, she continues to compose and perform in the highlands alongside working as a secondary school music teacher.

Emma Donald has been playing the violin since the age of 8. Growing up, she enjoyed learning both classical and traditional Scottish music, and has strived to keep both passions running simultaneously. She has a first class honours degree in music from the University of Edinburgh. Emma is a founding member of the Fyrish String Quartet, the Hans Gal Trio, and Turadh. Emma and Isbel are both passionate composers of traditional music, which is what initially brought them together as a duo. They both strive to push boundaries of what is expected from their instruments along with composing original, exciting and challenging music. Their debut CD is called ‘Arenite’ and features six of their sets, all original music composed by the two of them. The first track on the CD is one they collaborated on called ‘The Tempest’ which is inspired by the coastline they both know so well.

The Mairs Family Band will play support.

Acoustic Nights @ The Meeting Place - 24th May

We are delighted to be hosting a special extra acoustic night show on Friday the 24th May. Leon Hunt and Jason Titley, from Bath, are a duo not to be missed!

This musical partnership started way back in the early nineties, at some truly unforgettable late-night festival jams. The magic of those early sessions inevitably led to the formation of a band, the groundbreaking and hugely popular ‘progressive’ bluegrass outfit, Daily Planet no less. Numerous projects and years later, they’re back as a duo, making the very most of the musical chemistry they always had but with the addition of decades of experience.

An evening in the company of Leon and Jason is a rare treat, more a musical conversation than a rigid performance. Playing guitar, banjo, gourd banjo, and percussion, these old friends will most likely confound any pre conceived ideas you may be harbouring as to what these instruments can (and should) do. As well as leaning heavily on traditional music from the US and The British Isles, their own compositions take on musical references from just about everywhere else.

Time - 7.30pm

Entry - £5 (donation)

Tea/filter coffee and home baking included.

Children go free.

Limited seating.

Come early to avoid disappointment.
